The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has launched a new initiative called the “Shraddhanjali Scheme”. This initiative helps those people who want to transport the mortal remains of their family members who passed away in another state. This is a very unique Idea by the Assam government to provide a free transportation facility for those families who are the permanent residents of Assam but living in other states. The government wants to help these families by providing a Dignified Transportation facility for their deceased person.

The main and only motive behind the scheme is to help the family. The chief minister of Assam wants every deceased from the other state to be transported to their native state with proper measures. This time is every family need support, so the government provide the commitment that they are with the families in their difficult times. The government launched the scheme in 2025 at Lok Seva Bhavan, Dispur. All the information regarding the scheme will be available on their official Seva Setu portal. During the launch event, the Chief Minister also mentioned that they would cover all the people who are studying outside the state of Assam and those who are working in other states. The Assam state, in coordination with government departments and Assam police help the family transport the dead bodies of their family members. By following all the laws and terms of transportation, they will help the family. So many families were not able to transport their dead family member due to transportation issues and legal procedures. By knowing this situation, the Chief Minister want to help these families so that they can give farewell to their loved one one last time with dignity.  This is a great initiative by the Assam government for those who are the domicile of the state. Assam police special branch, known as the state nodal agency, will help with the successful implementation of shraddhanjali scheme all over Assam.

They will coordinate with the other states and take care of all the transportation facilities for the dead bodies. The district Nodal Officer has the duty to hand over the body to the families of their particular district. The people who want to avail this benefit provided by the Assam chief minister can contact the local police or also send a message to the special Twitter account created for the scheme. Any family member, friend, colleague, or anyone can contact the police control room by dialling 112 and share the details of the person with the disease and their location. They will also ask for other information from you.

Terms and Conditions

• The scheme is only applicable to those families who are not economically well off.
• The government implement the scheme for the youth who are doing low-paying jobs in other states, and students who are studying in other states.
• The person who died in special circumstances, like murder, accidents, etc., will be eligible to get the benefit of the scheme.
• This is only applicable to the deceased person and not to those who are undergoing any major medical treatment outside Assam.
• All the expenses of transportation will be paid by the state government.
• The state Nodal Officer of Assam police has created a special account for the implementation of the scheme smoothly. As per the requirement of transportation for the dead bodies, they will get the payment from the state Nodal Officer.
• The fund will be transferred directly to the district nodal officers.
• The scheme officially started and was implemented on the first of October 2025.
• The scheme is implemented by the State Home and Political Department in Association with the Assam police.

Beneficiaries

• The student who are doing their higher education in other states outside Assam.
• The migrant workers who are doing their jobs in other states.
• The government also cover those families who are not financially stable and belong to the economically weaker section.
• Those who are undergoing any medical treatment outside Assam are not covered under the scheme.

Objectives

• By introducing the scheme, the government is showing some responsibility for those who are residing outside Assam for jobs and study.
• In case of any accidental death of these persons, the government provides full support for transportation to the family.
• The Assam police will coordinate with the family members and start the transportation of the dead body with dignity as soon as possible.
